A mum has been left overjoyed after giving birth to a hospitals first set of twins on New Year's Day - just a year after she suffered her second miscarriage.

Brigitta Suha, 32, was surprised to learn that she had given birth to University Hospital Coventry's first baby of the new year on January 1 of this year.

Veronika was born at 2.54am weighing 5lbs 110z and followed shortly by second born Viktoria at 3.29am weighing 5lb 3oz.

The joyous news came after what had been a 'terrible couple of years' for Brigitta and husband of eight years, Norbert, 35, after she suffered two miscarriages in 2020 and 2021.

After experiencing bleeds in the first six weeks of pregnancy with the twins, Brigitta became concerned that she was experiencing another miscarriage.

But, after going for a scan early in this pregnancy, she was shocked to learn there was not one heartbeat, but two.

Brigitta, of Barwell, Leics., was put into an induced labour on December 31 at 10pm meaning her first born was the first born at the hospital in the new year.

Brigitta, originally from Hungary but moved to England in 2012, said: "It has been amazing to find out that we were the first twins of 2022 at the hospital.

“It has been really nice. Having being born on New Year’s Day, it is certainly and birthday I will not forget.

"It will be a nice story to tell them when they get older.

"The surprise came really early that we were having twins. I had my daughter, Bernadett in 2019, and then after that, unfortunately, I suffered two miscarriages, one in 2020 and another in 2021.

"I went into Coventry early on in this pregnancy because I was bleeding and was rushed in for scans and found out we were having twins. We were really happy - scared too.

"Obviously because we were having twins, and I was high risk of pregnancy, we had to be careful and go for extra scans and meetings.

"The NHS policy with twins, is to induce them at 37 weeks - and then I went into labour on New Year's Eve at 10 in the evening. Obviously, at the time, you are not thinking could this be the first birth of the new year.

"But the birth of both Veronika and Viktoria went really well - we are both so happy."

Brigitta, who works in finance, said the staff on birthing unit were really helpful and were able to celebrate with her on the first birth of 2022 at the hospital.

She added: "We had two midwives with us and the health care assistant with us, who were amazing.

"With covid restrictions in place at the hospital, the staff at the hospital were so helpful. It was a nice experience.

“They made us feel really welcome. We were really worried about covid, but in the end, it was fine.

"We were in a twin delivery room so my husband could be there with us.

“The staff at the hospital were just as happy as us by the looks of it; we were really happy to share the experience with them – especially after they had been working hard over the Christmas and New Year period.”

Proud father, Norbert, a manufacturing engineer, said the babies are well, happy and healthy and are now enjoying time with their big sister, Bernadett, 2, at home.

Norbert added: "Bernadett was, at first, shocked thinking 'what are all those babies doing here?'.

"But then after a couple of minutes, she has started to help with bathing them and look after her younger sisters.

“We are all really happy with news.”
