Destructive cults make use of loaded language in order to speak freely about topics that would otherwise be questioned by those not yet indoctrinated and avoid those questions surfacing among their victims. William Branham’s “Message” cult following is no exception. Cult leaders in the “Message” use specific Bible verse titles when referring to William Branham. The “Malachi 4” title is secret codeword for “Branham was the “prophet Elijah”. “Zechariah 14:7” is secret codeword for “Branham was the promised light for the end of the world”. “Revelation 10:7” is secret code for “Branham was the seventh angel of Revelation”. To an outsider listening to a sermon, these titles mean nothing more than a verse from the Bible. But to those indoctrinated, they have a much more sinister meaning.<br /><br />The most interesting of these secret codewords is the loaded language for “Luke 17:30”, which is secret codeword for “Branham was the Son of Man”. It is closely tied to Branham’s “Manifest Sons of God” theology which empowered Jim Jones of Peoples Temple, but it was also a long-term indoctrination strategy Branham used to refocus attention from Jesus Christ, the Biblical “Son of Man” to himself as the “Elijah Son of Man”. In 1964, after having established the other secret codewords for “Elijah”, “prophet”, “messenger”, and “evening light”, and more, William Branham started indoctrinating members with the Luke 17:30 title to claim that codeword “Elijah”, the codeword “light of this day”, — William Branham — was “Jesus Christ”. In no uncertain terms, Branham said “not a man but God, in the form of a prophet”.
