A “horrific” blaze which raged for almost 12 hours has completely “destroyed” the roof of a building in Deptford, firefighters have said.<br /><br />Witness Catherine, who lives nearby and called the fire service, told how she saw firefighters “hacking” with axes at the roof as they tried to extinguish the inferno.<br /><br />She said: “Firefighters are now on the roof hacking with claw axes at the roof surface.<br /><br />“The entrance to the balcony area which opens from the communal stairwell has now caved in. <br /><br />"Firefighters in oxygen tanks completely encased in smoke plumes.<br /><br />“Horrific amount of noxious fumes and billowing smoke.”<br /><br />Video: CASTALLE @catherinejw_
