Ukrainian officials search and detonate mines left in north Kharkiv by 'Russia'.

Russian forces have reportedly 'laid landmines and booby-traps across Ukraine'.

Even though Russia is not party to the international convention that bans the use of anti-personnel landmines, these reported actions would violate both general international law on war crimes and an international protocol to which Russia is a party that specifically regulates such devices.

These reports assert that many such mines and booby-traps were left in populated areas, including in streets, houses and automobiles, and on corpses and medical items. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of air-dropping plastic “butterfly” mines.

All this has reportedly endangered civilians and would necessitate extensive clearance efforts.

The Sun newspaper brings you the latest breaking news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world
