English Cyclist Matt Walls in Crash as Flies into Crowd and Leaves Fan Covered at Commonwealth Games

ENGLAND cyclist Matt Walls suffered a terrible accident at the Commonwealth Games when he crashed into the CROWD, leaving a fan covered in blood.<br /><br />The accident, which involved several cyclists, occurred during the final lap of the men's qualifying of the 15km scratch race and medical teams rushed to the scene.<br /><br />Matt Bostock from the Isle of Man had to be carried off on a stretcher, while English cyclist Walls and his bike went flying over the barriers and into the crowd.<br /><br />Paramedics erected screens to protect Olympic champion omnium Walls as he received treatment and took away a man in a wheelchair covered in blood.<br /><br />After the collision, the morning session was abandoned (only one race remained) and the velodrome in East London quickly emptied of spectators.<br /><br />Three cyclists, Walls, Bostock and Canadian Derek Gee, were taken to hospital. Two spectators were attended to at the velodrome.<br /><br />But British Cycling later said: "Following medical treatment at hospital, Matt Walls was released with stitches to his forehead, scrapes and bruises, but fortunately no serious injuries."<br /><br />"We send our best wishes to all other riders and spectators involved in the crash and thank the medical teams for their expert care."<br /><br />The athlete tonight updated fans on Twitter.<br /><br />He tweeted: "Thank you all for the messages and support! Somehow I made it out with no serious injuries, just a few stitches and quite a bit of bruising. Really hope everyone else involved is okay, including any spectators who may have been hurt."<br /><br />Britain's Ethan Vernon won qualifying, but Canada's Mathias Guillemette was disqualified by race officials for causing the initial crash.<br />
