Remembering US Prisoners of War<br />and Those Missing in Action.<br />On the third Friday of September, the United States observes a day of remembrance for those who were prisoners of war (POW) or those who are missing in action (MIA). .<br />This year’s National POW/MIA<br />Recognition Day is held on Sept. 18.<br />On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, <br />the National League of Families’ POW/MIA <br />flag is flown. .<br />The flag symbolizes the country’s remembrance of those imprisoned or still missing due to conflicts of war. .<br />According to the Defense Department’s POW/MIA Office, 1,741 Americans are listed as missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. .<br />90 percent of those people are believed to be<br />lost in Vietnam or in areas of Laos and Cambodia
