16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was an English comedian, director and film composer who rose to prominence during the silent film era. He became a world icon through his role as "Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. He had a career for more than 75 years from his childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977. His career was colored by both positive and negative responses.
