We are frequently given misleading information about Islam, including the assertions that it is a violent religion and that its holy book serves as motivation for terrorists. Without having at least a basic understanding of the Qur'an, there is no way to evaluate these assertions.<br /><br />What distinguishes the Qur'anic text from other holy texts? How has the book provoked challenges in Western and other cultures' attempts to interpret it?<br /><br />Emeritus history professor Garry Wills teaches at Northwestern University.
