US Customs Agents , Seize Eggs , at the US-Mexico Border.<br />CBS reports that United States <br />customs officials are cracking down on <br />egg smugglers amid soaring egg prices.<br />According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection <br />spokesman Roger Maier, Americans are trying <br />to smuggle eggs from Mexico across the border.<br />We are seeing an increase in people <br />attempting to cross eggs from Juarez <br />to El Paso because they are significantly <br />less expensive in Mexico than the U.S. <br />This is also occurring with added frequency <br />at other Southwest border locations, Roger Maier, U.S. Customs and Border <br />Protection spokesman, via CBS.<br />San Diego U.S. Customs and Border Protection field operations <br />director Jennifer De La O said in a tweet that her office , "has recently noticed an increase in <br />the number of eggs intercepted at our ports.".<br />CBS reports that failing to declare <br />agricultural items, like raw eggs, <br />can carry fines up to $10,000.<br />According to customs rules, federal law <br />prohibits certain agricultural products , "because they may carry plant pests<br />and foreign animal diseases.".<br />The USDA banned eggs <br />from entering the U.S. <br />from Mexico back in 2012. .<br />According to Border Report, the number of raw egg <br />incidents reported at the U.S. border jumped over 100% in <br />the last three months of 2022 compared to the year before.<br />According to Border Report, the number of raw egg <br />incidents reported at the U.S. border jumped over 100% in <br />the last three months of 2022 compared to the year before.<br />Meanwhile, the cost of eggs has surged <br />across the U.S. to reach an average of <br />$4.25 a dozen, up from just $1.79 in 2021. .<br />CBS reports that those prices have been driven by <br />increased consumer demand combined with a decrease <br />in domestic egg supplies due to an avian flu epidemic.
