In 2022 a Record Number of People Were Killed by The Police

VICE News reports that 1,176 people were killed by police in the United States last year.<br />It was the highest number of deadly police incidents since the nonprofit organization Mapping Police Violence has been recording data.<br />According to the creator of the project, Samuel Sinyangwe, the number includes deaths connected with shootings and other forms of force.<br />Mapping Police Violence's data suggests that police killed the equivalent of 3.2 people per day in 2022. <br />According to the nonprofit, there were only 12 days in 2022 that a deadly police encounter was not reported.<br />A third of all police deaths reportedly came during a traffic stop, mental health and welfare check or non-violent offense.<br />Mapping Police Violence's data shows that a disproportionate 24% of those killed by police were Black.<br />One in three of all people killed by police were fleeing from law enforcement at the time of their death.<br />VICE News reports that while some high-profile instances of police violence have seen convictions, most officers still face little to no legal consequences for taking a life. <br />According to Mapping Police Violence data, less than 2% of officers involved in the death of a citizen <br />between 2013 and 2022 have faced charges.<br />VICE News reports that less than 0.3% of those officers ended up being convicted.
