Two powerful earthquakes struck close to the Turkey-Syria border this week The death toll is expected to reach 20,000 according to the WHO.<br /><br />The heavily-populated border between Turkey and Syria in the early hours of Monday morning (6 February). Both earthquakes are the worst seen in Turkey since the Erzincan natural disaster in 1939.<br /><br />Aftershocks and the freezing weather have hampered rescue efforts. It has led to fears that time is now running out for any survivors still trapped under rubble.<br />
