New Zealand conspired to give Stuart Broad a reprieve in England's second innings after Scott Kuggeleijn and Tom Blundell left a catch to each other.<br /><br />Broad had been making his first appearance as the dubbed 'nighthawk', with England captain Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum having given him the role as an attacking night watchman.<br /><br />The 36-year-old attempted to live up to the expectations with a wild slog of his second ball, but only managed to smash high into the air.<br /><br />A catch appeared inevitable, only for uncertainty between bowler Kuggeleijn and wicketkeeper Blundell to follow.<br /><br />The pair left the catch for each other, with the ball dropping safely to the ground.<br /><br />Broad's reprieve prompted astonished reactions from his watching England teammates on the balcony.<br /><br />Stokes was seen placing both hands on his head in amazement, while Will Jacks could be seen laughing at the incident.<br /><br />Broad saw out the remainder of play on day two of the Test at the Bay Oval, ending on six not out from the 13 balls faced.<br /><br />He will return to the crease tomorrow with Ollie Pope, who is 14 not out, with England currently 79 for two in their second innings.<br /><br />The tourists lost both openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett for 28 and 25 respectively, as they seek to build their lead.<br /><br />England has a 98-run lead in the day-night Test having earlier bowled New Zealand out for 306 in their first innings.<br /><br />Broad and Jimmy Anderson drew level with Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne on 1,001 Test wickets as a partnership, after the latter caught and bowled Blundell.<br /><br />Blundell had starred with the bat for the hosts, hitting 138 off 181 balls.
