Berlin / Delhi – The first rail car of a brand new metro fleet for Delhi, India has touched down in the Indian capital on February 26, 2009. The inaugural BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro vehicle, the first of a 424-car fleet being built by Bombardier for customer Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC), travelled to its new home aboard an Antonov An-124 cargo plane. <br />The MOVIA fleet will play a vital role in increasing sustainable mobility for India’s capital and will transport an impressive 4 million passengers every day. <br />The rail car, weighing a hefty 45 tons, left Bombardier’s production site in Görlitz, Germany. It was taken by special road transportation to Parchim airport, Germany, where it was loaded onto the Antonov. <br />The 22.5 meter long and 3.2 meter wide metro car was received with celebrations and high media interest in Delhi. <br />The first 36 vehicles for DMRC will be built in Goerlitz, Germany and the following 388 cars in Savli, India, where Bombardier has recently inaugurated a modern railway vehicle manufacturing facility.
