Most nosebleeds can be handled at home, but certain symptoms should be checked by a physician.<br /><br />What is the main cause of epistaxis?<br />A nosebleed happens when one of the blood vessels in the lining of the nose bursts. Nosebleeds may be caused by infection, injury, allergic reaction, nose-picking or an object being pushed into the nostril. Another name for nosebleeds is epistaxis. Bleeding from the nose is common in children and is usually not serious.<br /><br />Initial management includes compression of the nostrils (application of direct pressure to the septal area) and plugging of the affected nostril with gauze or cotton that has been soaked in a topical decongestant. Direct pressure should be applied continuously for at least five minutes, and for up to 20 minutes
