A bungling motorist took a drive-thru sign literally - and ploughed into a McDonald's.

Pictures from the scene show the silver, jeep-style car positioned on top of the restaurant's crushed fence, just metres from bemused diners.

It appears to have careered out of control and collided with the perimeter fence, knocking it flat.

Police and fire crews rushed to the scene at the Three Lakes Retail Park in Selby, North Yorks., just before 6pm yesterday (Mon).

Witnesses said the driver of the car wasn't injured and fire crews confirmed all occupants got out of the vehicle safely before their arrival.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service didn't confirm how many people were in the car.

The drive-thru was closed after the collision, but the main restaurant continued serving customers.

A recovery truck towed away the damaged car.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service said: "All occupants of the vehicle were out on arrival.

"Crews made the scene safe before handing the incident over to the police."

After the service shared photos of the aftermath on social media, one wag quipped: "New drive thru now available at McDonald’s."

Another joked: "That’s not the way to jump the queue."

A third added: "Must have heard the chicken Big Mac was back and got excited."

North Yorkshire Police has been contacted for comment.
