Birmingham headlines 16 June: Alfie Steele’s mum Carla Scott and her boyfriend Dirk Howell jailed for at least 59 years<br />Carla Scott and Dirk Howell have been jailed for at least 59 years for killing nine-year-old Alfie Steele. Schoolboy Alfie died in the bath following months of torture during lockdown. Howell was convicted of murder and Scott was found guilty of manslaughter and child cruelty.<br /><br />Police have charged two people with robbery after a 51-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his eye following an attack in Erdington. The man was assaulted – and his credit cards were stolen - just after 1am on 3 June. Both appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.<br /><br />Firefighters attended a fire in a student accommodation at University of Birminghamin Edgbaston on Thursday. Around 40 residents had evacuated themselves from Chamberlain Hall. Firefighters said the blaze was caused by cooking being left unattended.
