Ross on Wye is a market town in Herefordshire, England. Its name is from the Welsh 'Rhosan' meaning a headland, as the town is on a hill overlooking the river Wye. Ross is about 11km from Wales at the nearest point; in Welsh it's "Rhosan ar Wy." So there is a lot of Welsh influence here, and the western part of Herefordshire was historically in Wales.

Ross is known as the birthplace of tourism in the UK due to its key position in the "Wye Tour."

Photographs:

Ross station by Ben Brooksbank, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=16082341

Monmouth railway bridges by Ralph Rawlinson, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=7253220

Ross Goods Shed by John Winder, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Ross Engine Shed via Google Maps https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.9157301,-2.5701316,3a,75y,279.59h,86.97t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s8P9qRFKzY0vK88j7W-hwnQ!2e0!5s20090501T000000!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu

Incidental music:

"Sicilienne," Gabriele Faure (Op. 78) dedicated to William Henry Squire (1871-1963), cellist and composer born in Ross on Wye.
