Glasgow headlines 3 August: UCI Cycling World Championships are underway

The UCI Cycling World Championships have officially begun following an opening ceremony on George Square. <br /><br />Cyclists from across the world will be taking over Glasgow and further afield for ten days for the biggest cycling event in history. <br /><br />The competitive action kicked off at 9.30am on 3 August with a series of races at the Chris Hoy velodrome. <br /><br />Next up, a by-election to replace MP Margaret Ferrier who was sacked after breaking Covid rules will take place as soon as possible.<br /><br />Almost 12,000 voters in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency backed the former politician’s unseating.<br /><br />In 2020, Ferrier travelled by train from London to Scotland following a positive Covid test. <br /><br />And in other news, plans to replace University Hospital Monklands in Lanarkshire have progressed as the NHS are now seeking approval from the Scottish Government. <br /><br />The application details plans to create the ‘most advanced hospital in Scotland’ that can deliver ‘first-class’ health projects.
