More than 100 firefighters were today battling a huge blaze which broke out at a waste centre.<br /><br />Dramatic footage shows a huge pall of smoke rising above the fire at the Herne Hill waste transfer station in south London.<br /><br />Local resident Joao Salerno, 60, captured the footage from his balcony overlooking the scene. <br /><br />London Fire Brigade were called just after 2am this morning (8) with crews from Brixton, Clapham, West Norwood and Peckham working to extinguish the flames. <br /><br />Fire chiefs confirmed via Twitter that approximately 100 firefighters were at the scene. <br /><br />Joao, from Herne Hill, said: “It looked huge – the building collapsed and the wall is totally destroyed. <br /><br />“Many people are still working on the fire now but there is still lots of smoke. <br /><br />“The wind is very low so we are lucky – the smoke is going up instead of into our homes.
