CNN was launched on June 1, 1980. According to its founder, philanthropist and media mogul Ted Turner, it was designed to broadcast until the end of the world.

Ted Turner was speaking quite literally. In fact, Turner created a piece of media in case of nuclear apocalypse. Called "The Doomsday Video," it remained in CNN's archives for decades, and was only publicly released a few years ago. It bore a heading that read, "TURNER DOOMSDAY VIDEO--HFR [hold for release] until end of the world confirmed."

The video is a strange, haunting, and beautiful piece of lost media. It's a relic of the Cold War, but, given the geopolitical threats we're currently facing, it still speaks to us today.
