Ancient Herculaneum Scrolls Decoded with AI Technology<br />The Herculaneum scrolls, nearly 2,000-year-old documents, were thought to be illegible until now.<br />Using computer tomography and advanced artificial intelligence, researchers have made a breakthrough.<br />The "Vesuvius Challenge" competition aimed to decipher the hidden words on the scrolls.<br />Luke Farritor, a computer science student, decoded the first full word: "πορφυρας" or "porphyras."<br />Computer tomography scans the coiled-up scrolls, which are then virtually flattened.<br />Researchers use advanced AI trained to find the ink on the page.<br />Efforts to interpret the scrolls have been ongoing for centuries.<br />Approximately 1,100 carbonized scrolls were recovered from the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum.<br />The grand prize of the Vesuvius Challenge is still up for grabs.<br />"These manuscripts are dialogues that they're having about philosophical views of the world," says Professor Brent Seales.<br />Decoding the scrolls provides a deep connection to the ancients and their thoughts.<br />#latestnews #news #cnn
