John Terry fired a ruthless nine-word comeback at Tottenham star James Maddison after the pair locked horns on social media in the wake of Chelsea's 4-1 triumph over Spurs on Monday night.

Maddison, who limped off injured during his side's disappointing defeat, commented on Terry's Instagram post which showed the former Chelsea captain jubilantly celebrating his old side's victory.

The ex-England international initially took to social media following the defeat to mock Tottenham after both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off for reckless challenges.

He shared several pictures of himself dancing on the bar with his wife Toni and wrote the accompanying caption: 'When Chelsea beat Spurs 4-1 on a school night and the tequila comes out, and you end up dancing and singing on the bar.'

Maddison was quick to respond to Terry saying: 'Jesus, u have ur eyes closed when it was 11 v 11 first 15 JT?.'

Terry replied with three laughing face emojis and the words: 'Madders, don’t worry mate you will get used to it' - implying Chelsea will continue to beat Tottenham in future London derbies.

Chelsea have struggled to replicate the success they enjoyed during Terry's career in recent seasons, falling off the pace since the arrival of American owner Todd Boehly.

Despite splashing the cash on a glut of new talents, the Blues finished 12th in the Premier League last campaign, four places and 16 points behind Tottenham.

And heading into Monday's enthralling clash in north London, Spurs were basking in a rich vein of form, having enjoyed an undefeated start to the campaign under Ange Postecoglou. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's side had lost four out of 10 matches.

Chelsea fans, including Terry, will hope the Blues' 4-1 win demonstrates there are better things to come at Stamford Bridge between now and the end of the season.
