A fatal accident marred the 10th Annual CRA Weekend at Imperial Valley Speedway, on Sunday, 07 March 1965 at the California Mid-Winter Fair in El Centro, California.<br /><br />36-year-old Ray Douglas was killed instantly when his sprint car flipped after hitting a lapped car on the final lap of the 6-lap Consolation Race. The car went end-over-end several times through a chainlink fence, and Douglas was thrown from the car.<br /><br />Douglas started racing at Lincoln Park Stadium in Los Angeles in 1949. He had raced with the California Racing Association (CRA) since 1955 and was a regular competitor on the circuit. Douglas had set a new track record at Hanford Speedway just two weeks earlier.<br /><br />Ray Douglas lived in San Gabriel, California, with his wife, Kay, and four children. He was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.<br /><br />Ray Douglas was reported to be the third CRA fatality in ten years on the half-mile oval of Imperial Valley Speedway. A month after his death, the CRA held a benefit movie party with the proceeds going to the family.<br /><br />R.I.P
