Tesla Recalls , 2 Million Vehicles , Over Autopilot Feature.
'The Guardian' reports that Tesla has ordered a recall of
over 2 million vehicles in the United States over safety
concerns about its Autopilot driver-assistance system.
The recall comes after the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said
Autopilot was vulnerable to "foreseeable misuse.".
In a recall filing, Tesla said that the
driver-assistance system controls "may not
be sufficient to prevent driver misuse.".
In August of 2021, the NHTSA opened an
investigation after identifying over a dozen
crashes involving the Autopilot feature. .
Ann Carlson, the acting NHTSA
administrator, told Reuters it was , "really important that driver monitoring
systems take into account that
humans over-trust technology.".
The Autopilot feature steers,
accelerates and brakes automatically,
keeping a driver within their lane.
The advanced Autopilot
mode can even help with
lane changes on the highway. .
While Tesla said it did not agree with the NHTSA's
findings, the automaker agreed to deploy an
over-the-air software update to address the issue.
According to Tesla, the update will , "incorporate additional controls and alerts to those
already existing on affected vehicles to further
encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous
driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged.".
Since 2016, the NHTSA has recorded over three
dozen crashes where Autopilot was believed to
be involved, with 23 associated deaths to date
