Arbroath goalkeeper Ali Adams played a key role in his side's comeback against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Championship - after coming on and scoring as an outfield player.

With all outfield substitutes used, manager Jim McIntyre turned to his bench and saw only Adams left, and needed to make a change with Aaron Steele going down injured just before the hour mark.

Three changes had already been made in the game, with Darren Lyon replacing Thomas O'Brien early, and Keaghan Jacobs and Kenan Dunnwald-Turan on at the half time.

Adams, branded 'a real team player' by the official Arbroath X account, played an important role up front and scored a stunner after 76 minutes to bring his team, who were 2-0 down, back into the game.

With the ball bouncing around 30 yards out, the 32-year-old tried his luck with a volley on the turn and fired high past Kevin Dabrowski to give his side hope of a result.

Arbroath, who are ninth out of 10 in the Scottish Championship table, named only four substitutes for the game, with Adams the backup goalkeeper, deputizing for Derek Gaston.

While he may not have expected to play a role unless, in the case of an emergency, McIntyre decided to play his in a forward role when center-back Steele went down hurt.

Wearing a kit he's not quite used to, Adams, who joined Arbroath in the summer from Musselburgh Athletic on a free transfer, trudged onto the pitch with the score still at 1-0.

The hope of any result against the league leaders seemed all but lost moments after he entered the pitch, with Jack Hamilton netting a second goal for the home side to make it 2-0.

But Adams took it upon himself on what was his league debut for his side to take a pot-shot from a distance and gave his side hope, with the Arbroath X account posting: 'Ali with an absolute SCREAMER from 20 yards out!!! WHAT A MAN!!'

Leighton McIntosh then scored from the penalty spot 10 minutes from time and the visitors held on for what was a well-earned point to keep them within touching distance of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who drew 0-0 against Greenock Morton on Saturday.

At full-time, the Arbroath side applauded the traveling fans, who lauded Adams in response.
