Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). <br /><br />It primarily affects children but can also occur in adults who have not been previously exposed to the virus or vaccinated against it.<br /><br />The incubation period is usually 10-21 days after exposure.<br /><br />Chickenpox is usually a mild illness in healthy children but can cause serious complications in certain groups, such as newborns, pregnant women, adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.<br /><br />Complications can include bacterial infections of the skin, pneumonia, & encephalitis.<br /><br />Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent chickenpox and its complications.
