A dad goes the extra mile and dives to catch his pregnant wife's craving - sea urchins.<br /><br />Ash Davis', 30, favourite food has always been the roe inside a sea urchin but her craving intensified when she fell pregnant.<br /><br />Her husband Louis is a keen diver and completes the 10 to 12 hour process to find the urchins from the sea floor and prepare it.<br /><br />The roe - the sex organ of the urchin - has to then be eaten fresh that day.<br /><br />Louis, a full time time content creator, from Northland, New Zealand, said: "The sea urchin - it's a delicacy.<br /><br />"We eat the roe - the sex organ.<br /><br />"That's my wife's favourite food.<br /><br />"It intensified during the pregnancy.<br /><br />"It's not a straight forward process to go and get it - you can't just go and get a takeaway.<br /><br />"It takes 10 to 12 hours to go to the sea and get what she wants.<br /><br />"She'll eat it the day it comes out of the ocean."<br /><br />Ash and Louis - who have Anakiwa, three, and Kānoa, one, together - are expecting their third child in the new year.<br /><br />The couple both grew up fishing and diving for fresh fish in the Pacific ocean and say it has always been a major part of their diet.<br /><br />Louis said: "We eat as much of our own seafood as we can."<br /><br />Louis, a keen diver, enjoys going out to find his wife her favourite food.<br /><br />He said: "It's my hobby.<br /><br />"I go on the boat with a buddy.<br /><br />"I have to go to the many spots. <br /><br />"I have a very thick wet suit and I descend to the sea floor using my breath. I pick and cut them off rocks on the sea floor.<br /><br />"I take what Ash needs for that day. We never freeze them."<br /><br />Louis then cracks them open using spoons.<br /><br />He said: "It's the ugliest thing. I collect all the roe and put it in a jar.<br /><br />"They all flavour up together. <br /><br />"It tastes like you ran your tongue along the sea floor. It's salty, very rich and very dominant.<br /><br />"I would say 99 per cent of people spit it our or vomit.<br /><br />"It's a unique flavour."<br /><br />Louis says many people online have been concerned about his wife eating fish while pregnant.<br /><br />He said: "There is a list of thing people say you can't eat - one of these is fish.<br /><br />"Our people have eaten fish for years. They are taken by own hands and later eaten.<br /><br />"For us it is pure and fresh."<br /><br />Louis says taking the urchin - an evasive species - also helps the marine eco-system.<br /><br />He said: "The greatest place on the planet is the ocean.<br /><br />"Few people get to spend time underwater.<br /><br />"It's the most majestic thing on our planet."
