Train fares across Scotland are set to increase after Government ministers judged the scrapping of peak fares to have failed.

For it to have been self-financing it would have had to boost passengers numbers by 10 percent but it only achieved a 6.8 percent increase.

This means that peak train fares will be re-implemented from 27 September which on most routes is before 9.15am on weekdays and between 4.42pm and 6.11pm.

During these periods an adult return ticket from Glasgow to Edinburgh will almost double from £16.20 to £31.40.

The intention of the pilot scheme was to persuade more people to swap car journeys for rail travel and ultimately move closer to their green ambitions.

While critics are calling this a “hammer blow”, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said it primarily benefitted those already using the trains and people on medium to higher incomes.

As a result of this, super off-peak tickets will be reintroduced on certain routes as well as discounts for Scotrail season ticket holders.

The initial pilot was scheduled to last for six months though was extended twice.
