Rosalia Chalia <br /><br />"Voi Lo Sapete O Mamma" <br /><br />Aria from Cavalleria Rusticana <br /><br />Victor 68400 <br /><br />1912 <br /><br />Rosalia Chalia's real name was Chalía Herrera née Rosalía Gertrudis de la Concepción Díaz de Herrera y de Fonseca. <br /><br />This Cuban soprano was born November 17, 1864, in Havana. <br /><br />Much of her career was spent in Cuba, but she also sang in Mexico City, New York City, Milan, Caracas, Madrid, and Barcelona. <br /><br />Chalía studied singing with Angelo Massanet. <br /><br />Then she went to New York to perfect her skills at the School of Opera and Oratorio of Emilio Agramonte. <br /><br />Later she studied violin with Laureano Fuentes Matons in Santiago de Cuba. <br /><br />In 1895 she appeared in the Weber Hall in New York, performing to raise money for the Cuban War of Independence. <br /><br />She was one of the earliest operatic stars to make a series of disc recordings. <br /><br />She sang for Eldridge R. Johnson's Victor Talking Machine Company, Bettini, Zonophone, and Columbia. <br /><br />She died on November 16, 1948.
