Counterfeit bottles of Glen’s vodka were found on sale within Glasgow convenience stores.

Food Standards Scotland has in turn issued a food alert and are urging councils to search their local shops warning the bottles could contain a potentially lethal chemical.

Dozens of 35cl bottles fraudulently labelled as Glen’s were seized from a store in Coatbridge last month after a customer reported a strong smell of nail varnish remover coming from its contents.

Samples were tested by authorities which revealed the presence of a dangerous chemical which can cause symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness, slow breathing, coma, and even death.

The scale of distribution is unknown though customer’s are being advised to look for a laser etched lot code between the rear label and base of the bottle.

They will also have these markers on the base of the bottle which will not vary.

They also say smelling the product is useful as the chemical has a strong odour.
