Dry Dock Ground (William Turner’s Gift)

In my song, “Dry Dock Ground”, I pay homage to one of my favorite artists, William Turner (1775-1851). My first experience with his paintings was as a child at the Frick Museum in NYC, where I was captivated by a large painting of ships. Countless times, both as a child and an adult, I visited the Frick Museum solely to admire this masterpiece. Years later, I visited the Tate Gallery in London, marveling at his diverse works, from realistic and dramatic techniques reminiscent of Dutch masters to impressionistic scenes (influenced by the idea of the sublime) like “Stormy Sea with Blazing Wreck.” His diverse style, technique, and energetic brushstrokes truly left me in awe. In his incredible homage to the lives that were lived and lost to the sea, he truly captured the essence of his time. Later on in the same trip, I took my family on a pilgrimage to the beautiful town of Margate, just outside of London in Kent, where we walked the sandy beaches and experienced firsthand the dry docks he depicted so beautifully. I hope this song captures my deep admiration for Turner’s legacy. “DRY DOCK GROUND©2024 Frederick Chipkin” Frederick Chipkin” I put my heart and soul into the songs I write.
