A research irradiator owned by Delhi University was sold to a scrap metal dealer in Mayapuri in February 2010. The dealer's workers dismantled the irradiator, unaware of its radioactive nature, and cut the cobalt-60 source into 11 pieces. One of the workers took a small piece of the cobalt-60 and kept it in his wallet..
