Stephen Maguire experienced momentary headloss during a fiery first session of the Welsh Open final - and it was the table that felt much of his wrath.

Up against Mark Selby for the title at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, Maguire had work to do as he stared down a 2-1 deficit in frames.

In an already precarious position, he then made a costly mistake to throw away another frame, extending Selby's lead in the competition's finale.

The Scot was down 30-24 in the fourth frame when a misplaced positional shot left him in a difficult position, forcing him to play for safety rather than go to pot.

Knowing he had messed up, Maguire banged his fist against the table in a burst of anger, shaking his head as disappointment and frustration consumed him.

The error allowed Selby to steal the frame, clearing the table with a break of 78 as Maguire watched on.

Maguire is competing in his first ranking final since 2020 after getting the better of Ali Carter on Saturday to reach the competition's climax.

It was after his semi-final triumph that Maguire quipped that he could 'wreck the place' if things didn't go his way against Selby.

Now cutting a figure of frustration after the first session, Jimmy White has offered words of sympathy to the 43-year-old.

Commenting on Maguire punching the table, White said: 'That hurt him, I've done that.'

White added: 'As he gets down, you can see the frustration. He can't get to it, no matter what he tries.

'He then comes down and looks like he is going to play the red in balk, but he plays this really poor safety shot. I think that's because he's not been in this situation for a while.

'He did not take a lot of care with that shot, and it cost him.'
