Highway users in Mason County, Washington, witnessed a surreal sight as salmon swam across a flooded road.<br /><br />Nathaniel Nagel filmed the unusual scene on Skokomish Valley Road in November, explaining that heavy rain and melting snow frequently cause the Skokomish River to overflow.<br /><br />The flooding coincides with the annual return of chum salmon, which instinctively follow the water’s path—even if it leads them onto roads.<br /><br />The fish, swept off course, are attempting to reach their spawning grounds before laying eggs and completing their life cycle.
