Hong Kong's iconic Sunbeam Theater bids farewell after 52 years<br /><br />One of Hong Kong’s most historic theatres, Sunbeam Theater, closed its doors for the last time on Tuesday, March 4, as over a thousand Cantonese opera fans gathered to bid farewell to the iconic venue.<br /><br />Founded in 1972, the North Point landmark, long regarded as a cornerstone of Cantonese opera, is set to be transformed into a church following its final curtain call.<br /><br />On Monday , the theater staged its last-ever performance to a full house. After the show, theater operator Edward Li hosted a farewell ceremony attended by audience members. The theater’s lights were switched off at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the end of an era as the shutters were pulled down one final time.<br /><br />Fans of Cantonese opera expressed their sorrow, many capturing the 52-year-old theater’s final moments on cameras and smartphones.
