The tradition has roots in Christianity encouraging people to return to the church they were baptised to celebrate the occasion. But today, Mothering Sunday or Mothers Day is celebrated as a way to honour mothers and motherhood figures often through a Sunday roast, a meal out, giving flowers or cards and gifts.
