Jayson Werth (born May 20, 1979) is an American former professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2002 to 2017. His 15-season career included stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Washington Nationals. <br /><br />Werth was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 1997 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on September 1, 2002. Over his career, Werth established himself as a power-hitting outfielder. He was named an All-Star in 2009 while playing for the Phillies, a season in which he hit a career-high 36 home runs. He also won a World Series championship with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008. <br /><br />Following the 2010 season, Werth signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Washington Nationals. He played a significant role in the Nationals becoming a regular contender, and he earned MVP votes in 2013 and 2014. Injuries hampered his later seasons, and he retired from professional baseball on June 27, 2018, after a brief attempt to return with the Seattle Mariners organization. In his MLB career, Werth had a .267 batting average with 229 home runs and 799 runs batted in.
