Hindhead, Haslemere, Bramshott and beyond were all ‘buzzed’ on Friday afternoon 9 May by a flypast from the UK’s last flying Lancaster bomber. The plane made three low passes over the school, creating unforgettable memories for all who witnessed it. The reason? To honour the service of former pupil, Squadron Leader Melvin ‘Dinghy’ Young, a pilot of 617 Squadron, formed in 1943 to carry out Operation Chastise, better known as the Dambuster Raid. Young’s crew was successful in hitting the Mohne dam, ultimately resulting in its breach, but they were tragically shot down over the Dutch coast, just a 20 minute flight from home.
