Some 50 warships take part in US-led NATO exercise BALTOPS in the Baltic Sea<br /><br />For the first time, Rostock is the starting point for one of NATO's largest naval exercises in the Baltic Sea with some 50 warships, 90 aircraft and 9,000 soldiers from 17 nations taking part.<br /><br />This year's Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) exercise, which has been held since 1971, includes USS flagship Mount Whitney from the US Navy´s Sixth Fleet.<br /><br />According to NATO, the aim is to improve joint capabilities in maritime operations, such as submarine defense, mine clearance and air defense. The large-scale exercise will be underway until June 20.
