Lightning - Lightning (1970 us, power stoner blues psych rock )

Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis ’60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom “Zippy” Caplan. After recording the Litter’s 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning.

The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single “William” b/w “Of Paupers And Poets” in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP.

Lightning became one of the Midwest’s hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure.

Tracklist

A1 Prelude To Opus IV
Written-By – Stanhope*, Woodrich*
0:00
A2 Hideaway
Written-By – Stanhope*, Woodrich*
4:14
A3 When A Man Could Be Free
Written-By – Stanhope*, Caplan*, Woodrich*
8:20
A4 Madame Sunrise
Written-By – Stanhope*, Caplan*, Woodrich*
12:51

B1 1930
Written-By – Stanhope*, Roberts*, Caplan*
18:56
B2 Freedom (Is Life With Living)
Written-By – Stanhope*, Roberts*, Woodrich*
23:17
B3 They've Got The Time
Written-By – Stanhope*, Woodrich*
29:10
B4 Riders In The Sky
Written-By – Edwin H.Morris*
35:04

Credits

Arranged By – Lightning (6)
Arranged By [Additional String Arrangement Arp Synthesizer] – Herb Pilhofer
Bass Guitar – Woody Woodrich
Design [Cover Design] – John Hanson (13)
Engineer [Chief Recording Engineer] – Tom Jung
Guitar – Ronn Roberts, Zip Caplan*
Lead Vocals – Mick Stanhope
Percussion – Bernie Pershey, Mick Stanhope
Producer – Ira Heilicher, Lightning (6), Pat Rains
Vocals – Ronn Roberts
