Tesla is recruiting vehicle operators in Queens, New York, to drive cars with “automated driving systems” despite not applying for permits required to test autonomous vehicles in the city, according to CNBC. The company is seeking vehicle operators in Queens to drive engineering cars for extended periods while collecting audio and camera data for testing and training. The New York City DOT said Tesla has not applied for permits to test autonomous vehicles on city streets. InsideEVs previously reported that Tesla sought robotaxi drivers in Brooklyn. Musk is promoting a future centered on AI and robotics, though Tesla still relies primarily on EV and battery storage sales for revenue. Tesla is also hiring Autopilot test drivers in several U.S. cities, including Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, and Palo Alto.
