In 2009, the Schaulager in Basel, Switzerland, presented the exhibition “From Holbein to Tillmans – Prominent Guests from the Kunstmuseum Basel”, which showcased around two hundred artworks from the Kunstmuseum Basel, alongside pieces from the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation and private collections. The external cause for this unique exhibition was the Van Gogh show, a major, comprehensive display running from April to September 2009 at the Kunstmuseum Basel. To accommodate this event, parts of the Kunstmuseum’s collection were relocated. Schaulager offered to house these works and present them in a special exhibition.

The exhibition, “From Holbein to Tillmans – Prominent Guests from the Kunstmuseum Basel”, aimed to offer a fresh perspective on these artworks at Schaulager. Some pieces were displayed on a grand wall in the Petersburger hanging style. Featured works included Rodney Graham’s Allegory of Folly, Hans Holbein the Younger’s Erasmus von Rotterdam, Ferdinand Hodler’s Das mutige Weib, Barnett Newman’s White Fire II, and Wolfgang Tillmans’ Anders pulling splinter from his foot.

This the 95th episode in our VTV Classics (r3) series.
