Children in Kharkiv start a new academic year in an underground school

Children in Ukraine's Kharkiv began the new academic year on Monday, September 1, in an underground school built to shield them from Russian attacks.

Among them was six-year-old Maria Yakunkina, whose mother said she chose the facility because it is located three floors below ground and offers a rare chance for in-person learning.

As air raid sirens sounded, teachers and students were gathered in classrooms equipped with modern supplies and safety systems.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov said 17,000 children will attend in-person classes this year. He added Kharkiv had seven newly built underground schools and six metro stations that host underground classrooms, with three more schools expected to open in January.

REUTERS VIDEO

Subscribe to The Manila Times Channel - https://tmt.ph/YTSubscribe
Visit our website at https://www.manilatimes.net

Follow us:
Facebook - https://tmt.ph/facebook
Instagram - https://tmt.ph/instagram
Twitter - https://tmt.ph/twitter
DailyMotion - https://tmt.ph/dailymotion

Subscribe to our Digital Edition - https://tmt.ph/digital
Sign up to our newsletters: https://tmt.ph/newsletters

Check out our Podcasts:
Spotify - https://tmt.ph/spotify
Apple Podcasts - https://tmt.ph/applepodcasts
Amazon Music - https://tmt.ph/amazonmusic
Deezer: https://tmt.ph/deezer
Tune In: https://tmt.ph/tunein

#TheManilaTimes
#WorldNews
#Ukraine
