Coinbase shares were slightly lower on Thursday, according to Benzinga. CEO Brian Armstrong announced plans to increase the share of AI-generated code at the company to more than 50% by October. Armstrong said Coinbase already relies on AI for 40% of daily code and noted productivity gains from using tools like Cursor, an AI-powered code editor. Armstrong said AI-generated code must be reviewed, is not suitable for all business areas, but should be used as responsibly and widely as possible. He admitted to firing engineers who resisted AI adoption, calling the move “heavy-handed” but necessary. Coinbase said faster adopters were using large language models to build frontend UI, expand testing suites, and handle less-sensitive backends. The move follows broader industry trends, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon, and Microsoft also emphasizing AI integration.
