USS Guardfish (SS-217), which was a highly successful Gato-class submarine known for sinking numerous Japanese ships, although it was also involved in a tragic friendly-fire incident. A later nuclear submarine, USS Guardfish (SSN-612), served in the Cold War and was the subject of its own history and memoirs.
