Antarctica is melting — but not the way most people imagine. Beneath its massive ice shelves, the ocean is quietly eating away at the ice from below. This process, called basal melting, is happening in a thin, hidden boundary layer just millimeters thick. Tiny ocean currents, temperature changes, and even the shape of the ice itself decide how quickly Antarctica loses ice.<br /><br />With the help of underwater robots, scientists have uncovered strange landscapes beneath the ice — scallops, terraces, and channels carved by melting.
