The murder of 71-year-old NRI woman Rupinder Kaur Pandher in Ludhiana has emerged as one of the most shocking cases of 2025, exposing an elaborate plot allegedly orchestrated by her fiancé, Charanjit Singh Grewal, a 75-year-old UK-based NRI.<br /><br />Rupinder, originally from Seattle, US, arrived in Ludhiana in July 2025 to marry Grewal, whom she had met through a matrimonial site. However, disputes over property and finances soon surfaced.<br /><br />She began staying with Sukhjeet Singh alias Sonu, a local court typist who had known Grewal for over a decade. According to police, Grewal allegedly offered Sukhjeet ₹50 lakh and the promise of a new life abroad to carry out the killing.<br /><br />On 12 July, at his home in Kila Raipur village, Sukhjeet murdered Rupinder with a baseball bat. He then burned her body, stuffed the remains into gunny sacks, and dumped them in a drain near Ghungrana or Lehra village in a bid to destroy evidence.<br /><br />Police cracked the case after recovering skeletal remains, a burnt iPhone, and tools used in the crime. Sukhjeet, who even filed a false missing-persons report claiming Rupinder had travelled to Canada, later confessed during interrogation.<br /><br />Investigators revealed that Rupinder had transferred significant sums to Grewal before travelling to India. The alleged motive was to prevent her from pursuing legal action against Grewal, who had backed out of the marriage.<br /><br />Rupinder’s sister, Kamal Kaur Khairah, raised the alarm after losing contact with her, leading to intervention by the US embassy and Ludhiana police.<br /><br />Currently, Sukhjeet Singh is in custody, while Grewal remains in the UK as the prime accused. Indian authorities have initiated diplomatic and legal steps to pursue him.
