Residents spent night 'praying for safety' as Super Typhoon Uwan slams into Philippines<br /><br />Homes in the northern Philippines were left severely damaged on Monday morning after Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) made landfall a day earlier, killing at least two people and forcing over one million to evacuate. <br /><br />In Santiago City, Isabela province, residents Romeo Mariano and his grandmother Filmomina said they had a sleepless night as the storm swept past the north of the archipelago's most populous island Luzon late on Sunday .<br /><br />According to the Philippine weather bureau Pagasa, the storm carried torrential rain and sustained winds of 185 kph (115 mph) with gusts of up to 230 kph (140 mph).<br /><br />It has weakened after crossing the mountainous terrain of Luzon and is currently on the coastal waters of La Union Province, according to the latest weather bulletin. <br /><br />It was the 21st storm this year to hit a nation only just recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left 224 dead in the Philippines and five in Vietnam. <br /><br />REUTERS
