Families mourn seven dead after tornado rips through Brazil's Rio Bonito

Authorities in Brazil say the death toll has risen to seven after a tornado struck the municipality of Rio Bonito in Parana state on Friday, leaving the area in a state of reconstruction.<br /><br />Footage from Tuesday shows the debris and damage caused by the tornado as state employees and volunteers work to clear the rubble.<br /><br />According to the Government of Parana, six deaths occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguacu and one in Guarapuava. Among the victims was a 14-year-old girl, identified as Julia Kwapis. At present, 21 people remain hospitalised.<br /><br />"Our world has collapsed (...) We have lost the most precious thing we had in this life... It still hasn't sunk in," said Roberto Kwapis, the father of one of those killed.<br /><br />Four days after the tornado, the Fire Department announced that search and rescue operations had concluded. The current phase of the operation focuses on social assistance and the recovery of affected areas.<br /><br />Authorities stated that 320 new homes will be built for families who lost theirs in the tornado, and that up to 50,000 reais per family will be provided to repair damaged furniture.<br /><br />The tornado destroyed 90 percent of the city and left around 750 people injured.
