A lion pride chased a hungry crocodile back into a river away from their meal.

Joel Kitopi was leading a tour through Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, on November 28 when a group of big cats protected a buffalo kill.

Dramatic footage captured the moment a lone crocodile attempted to snatch a part of the carcass, only to be faced down by one lion.

The crocodile snapped its jaws but quickly realised it was outnumbered and backed off back into the river.

Joel said: “It was a powerful and unforgettable display of the pride’s strength, coordination and dominance in their territory.

“They brought down a massive buffalo for an early lunch. As they fed, a Nile crocodile attempted to climb out of the water to claim a share of the carcass.

“The lionesses reacted immediately, charging at the crocodile and forcing it back into the river.

“The dramatic encounter continued for more than two hours, even after we left to continue our day’s game drive.”
